The Young Victoria (2009)

Film reviews are subjective. I tend to rate films not according to how “perfect” they are, seem to be, or are said to be in general but rather to how perfect they are to me.

The Young Victoria (2009) from GK Films
Rated PG. Drama, Romance, Royalty, Biography/Historical
Academy Award: Best Costume Design

Five Gold Stars

Description (from the film case): Resolved to establish her authority over those who rule in her stead, a young and inexperienced Queen Victoria [Emily Blunt] draws strength from the love of Albert [Rupert Friend], the handsome prince who’s stolen her heart. Based on the courtship and early reign of England’s longest-serving monarch, The Young Victoria is a majestic tale of romance, intrigue, and power.

My thoughts: Yes, I enjoy movies about kings and queens, and this one is quite beautiful. Blunt gives a wonderfully three-dimensional performance as Victoria, and I appreciate that her royal wedding to Albert isn’t the end of the story, a happily-ever-after-fade-to-black, but there’re more obstacles to get over without giving the romance an after-wedding-anticlimax feel. Oh, and I love “Only You,” both as the moving score and the song accompanying the closing credits.
